There is nothing like homemade plum tomato sauce made from scratch! The perfect recipe for Alkaline Vegans!

tomato sauce in a ladle in a pot

Just like my homemade tomato paste recipe, this plum tomato sauce has spoiled me from ever wanting to buy store bought again!

I have made tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes before for my red lentil bolognese recipe, but with this recipe, all the ingredients are Dr. Sebi approved!

Knowing how to make condiments from the ingredients on Dr. Sebi list, will be KEY to enjoying your diet while achieving healthy alkaline vegan weight gain!

    Plum Tomato Sauce Ingredients

picture of ingredients for homemade tomato sauce
    • Plum (Roma) Tomatoes: The start of this recipe! Roma tomatoes are great for a thicker tomato sauce because they are less watery.
    • Homemade Plum Tomato Paste: To keep it Dr. Sebi friendly, I used some homemade tomato paste made with plum tomatoes and it really gives this tomato sauce a boost!
    • Onion: Just like with garlic, we are using onions as an aromatic for this dish.
    • Olive Oil: You can always sauté in broth but who doesn't like olive oil?
    • Sea Salt: This is used to help balance the acidity in the tomatoes.
    • Agave Nectar: Yes SUGAR GOES IN SPAGHETTI! Agave nectar is sweet enough to cut some of the acidity in the tomatoes.
    • Fresh Basil: This is optional but brings such a nice flavor to your tomato sauce!

    Storage Tips

There are two ways to store your tomato paste: canning and freezing it.

    Canning

Canning is a long delicate process and is not my preferred way to store it. And if you follow a Dr. Sebi Diet, be aware that there might be a need to use a preservative.

But if you want to give this a go, check out this informative Canning for Beginners article. You can also purchase canning books on Amazon.

    Freezing

This is my preferred way of doing things because it is super easy and straight forward.

Portion plum tomato sauce per ½ -1 cup and vacuum seal it or add it to some freezer Ziploc bags. Let it freeze over night.

This should last for 3-4 months. Up to 6 months if vacuum sealed.

    Ingredients

    • 4 pounds roma (plum) tomatoes (23 small-medium roma tomatoes) note 1
    • 1½ - 2 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • ½ - 1 tablespoon agave nectar note 2
    • ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon homemade tomato paste note 3
    • fresh basil (optional)
    US Customary - Metric

    Equipment

    1 Colander
    1 Large Mixing Bowl
    1 Large Pot
    1 Cutting Board
    1 Chef Knife
    1 Handheld Blender
    1-2 Mason Jars

    Instructions

    Removing Skin From Tomatoes

    • Rinse your tomatoes thoroughly in a colander. Take each rinsed tomato, cut an "X" across the top, and place them in your large mixing bowl. (See photo above or view video for demonstration). This will allow you to easily peel the skin off your tomatoes.
    • In a large pot, fill it up with water and bring to a boil. Once water is boiling, turn off off heat.  Place all your tomatoes in the pot with the boiling water and let it sit for 5 minutes until the skin on the tomatoes start to peel.
    • Carefully remove the skin from each tomato and place peeled tomatoes bake in your large mixing bowls. The skin should come off easily. Discard water from the pot and place back on the burner.

    Making Your Tomato Sauce

    • Chop your peeled tomatoes on a cutting board and set aside. To a large pot, add oil and chopped onions. Sauté on medium high heat until onions softened. Then add your tomatoes. Turn down heat to low and allow it to simmer for about 20 minutes uncovered, until tomatoes start to break down and releases it's liquid.
    • Next, add sea salt, agave nectar, and homemade tomato paste. Mix well and taste to adjust seasonings to your liking. Simmer for an additional 20 minutes uncovered. Once done, turn off heat. Take a handheld blender and blend your sauce until it is smooth.
    • Rinse, pat dry, and chop fresh basil. Add that to your pot and mix in well. Serve over some spelt pasta or store in mason jars.

    1.  ROMA TOMATOES: You can use any tomatoes you have available to you.  If you follow a strict Dr. Sebi diet, roma tomatoes are the ones that are recommended to use.
    2. AGAVE NECTAR: This is used to balance out the acidity of the tomatoes. However, you can omit it you don't like any type of sugar in your spaghetti sauce. I tried this with date sugar and found it is not sweet enough to cut through the acidity of the tomato sauce.
    3. TOMATO PASTE: If you want, you can use store bought tomato paste. If you are on a strict Dr. Sebi diet, I have not found a store bought plum tomato paste which is why I recommended making your own homemade plum tomato paste.
