If you have 10 minutes to give me, I have the BEST easy vegan gravy recipe to give you! Top over vegan mashed potatoes, vegan meatballs, and more!

Gravy is one of those recipes that just complete any hearty meal.

Of course I love it on creamy vegan mashed potatoes. But I also have been known to smothered it with some fried oyster mushrooms, top it over my lentil meatballs, and my delicious lentil shepherd's pie!

However you choose to eat it, you will keep coming back to this recipe because it is so simple to make and just so dang on good!

What is Vegan Gravy Made of?

Just like traditional gravy, you have the base made of the following:

    • vegetable broth
    • flour
    • vegan butter
    • spices

Now when typically I would use my sea moss vegan bone broth as a based for any recipe calling for broth. But for this recipe, I use Not Beef Stock Cubes by Edward Sons.

The flavor is phenomenal and you do not need any salt when using this broth cube. Also, it helps darken the gravy a bit.

For the flour, I used an old time staple here on Vegan With Curves, yep you guessed it, spelt flour.

Spelt flour has a higher protein content which is perfect for vegan weight gain. It is more digestible than wheat or white flour. And it is dark which adds a nice rich and color to our gravy!

    SUBSTITUTION, COOK, & STORAGE TIPS

    • If you want a more brown gravy, try using dark soy sauce. Just be careful of the high sodium content. Teff flour can also be use to darken the color.
    • This is a base gravy recipe so feel free to add onions or mushrooms if you like!
    • Gravy will only keep for 2 days in the the refrigerator. For longer storage, you will need to freeze it. You can use a vacuum sealer to do this or put portion sizes in silicone ice trays.

    Ingredients

    • 1 not beef stock cube note 1
    • 2 ¼ cups boiling water
    • 4 tablespoon spelt flour note 2
    • 4 tablespoon vegan butter
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
    • 2 tablespoons Bragg’s liquid aminos
    • black pepper to taste
    US Customary - Metric

    Equipment

    Sauce Pan
    Large Glass Mixing Cup
    Whisk

    Instructions

    • In a large heat glass mixing cup, crumble up broth cube. Grab a saucepan, add water, and place over high heat until it starts to boil. As so as it starts to boil, turn off heat, and pour water into your glass mixing cup where your broth cube is. Mix together until broth cubes dissolve creating your broth. (This step can be skipped if you are using a store bought broth).
    • Next, add spelt flour to the broth a little at at a time, whisking as you add flour until it is well combined and lump free.
    • Melt vegan butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Then add the flour/broth mix to the saucepan along with onion powder, garlic powder, Bragg’s liquid aminos, and black pepper. Whisk together continuously until it thickens.
    • Serve over our creamy vegan mashed potatoes or smothered fried oyster mushrooms and enjoy!
