In just 30 minutes, this Vegan Vegetarian Fried Cabbage will give you just the right amount of soul without the cruelty!
I grew up on Midwestern and Southern Soul Food!
Going vegan didn't all of a sudden change my desire to enjoy cultural foods near and dear to my heart. In fact, I eat MORE vegan soul food recipes because the plant based versions are healthier, cruelty free, and do not lack any flavor!
This vegan fried cabbage recipe is no different!
Traditional vs Vegan Fried Cabbage
Traditional fried cabbage is usually made with pork bacon or some type of animal based sausage. However you can easily substitute this with your favorite brand of vegan bacon and vegan sausages.
In this recipe I used Sweet Earth vegan bacon (not sponsored). I love the flavor of it and it's made with ingredients I can recognize. Now it doesn't have a crunchy texture if you prefer that, you might want to go with another brand.
Or even better you can make your own out things like rice paper! That viral Gordon Ramsay's Vegan Bacon recipe would be awesome in this!
Although the addition of a vegan bacon and/or vegan sausage adds more protein to this dish (crucial for healthy vegan weight gain), this dish stands on it's own without it.
What Do You Eat with Fried Cabbage?
- vegan spelt cornbread
- vegan butter beans
- vegan lentil loaf
- lentil meatballs
- literally anything lol it is a wonderful hearty and filing side dish!

SUBSTITUTION, COOK, & STORAGE TIPS
- I never tried this using purple cabbage but you are more than welcome to try it! Even better if you want to experiment, try a mixture of green and purple cabbage.
- For higher protein content, I recommend keeping the vegan bacon or using a vegan sausage but that is totally optional! Potatoes can work with this as well.
- This cabbage recipe will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 5 days and can even be frozen for up to 3 months. Allow your cabbage to cool and use a vacuum sealer or place in a freezer friendly air tight containers or Ziploc bags.

Notes
- CABBAGE: You can use pre chopped cabbaged to save time. I never tried this using purple cabbage but you are more than welcome to try it! Even better if you want to experiment, try a mixture of green and purple cabbage.
- VEGAN BUTTER: I used vegan butter for a more Southern traditional taste but you can do this with coconut oil or even oil free with broth.
- VEGAN BACON: For higher protein content, I recommend keeping the vegan bacon or using a vegan sausage but that is totally optional! Potatoes can work with this as well.

I really enjoyed this recipe. I didn’t add bacon ( I eat plant based) and sautéed in broth instead of oil. I did add diy vegan bacon bits at the end. I will make this again. Quick and easy. Thank you.
