No where online will you find a recipe better than these vegan southern baked beans! These baked beans will be the most talked about dish at the barbecue!
While I love my stove top baked beans recipe, nothing compares to these vegan southern baked beans!
This is the type of baked bean casserole I grew up on and yes I made it vegan. Vegan Soul Food is just as delicious without the cruelty and much more healthier!
Vegan Southern Baked Beans Main Ingredients
- Cannellini Beans (White Kidney Beans): For the base of this recipe, I used white navy beans. Some used pinto beans but I personally love the texture of tase of white beans.
- Vegan Ground Beef: This is the STAR of making your southern style baked beans. You can use whatever vegan grounds you like there are so many options on the market today!
- Brown Sugar: The main source of sweetness for these beans.
- Molasses: For additional sweetness, PLUS to add color to your beans.
- Vegan BBQ Sauce: This homemade vegan BBQ sauce is hands down the BEST BBQ sauce ever! (I’m from St. Louis so trust me on this lol). This adds a nice tanginess to your baked beans.

SUBSTITUTION, COOK, & STORAGE TIPS
- I used Cannellini Beans (White Kidney Beans) for this recipe but you can substitute for pinto beans or even a mixture of white beans and pinto beans.
- Canned beans makes this recipe a little faster but if you want to use dried beans, you will need to have those beans pre cooked before making this recipe.
- This recipe will keep in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. You can freeze this meal for up to 2 – 3 months. The best way to freeze your baked beans is to vacuum seal it. It stays fresher that way.

The BEST Southern Baked Beans
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup + 1 tablespoon molasses
- 1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 teaspoon mustard
- 2 tablespoon vegan BBQ sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ medium onion, chopped
- ½ medium green pepper, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 package (12 oz or 0.75 lbs) vegan ground beef (whatever brand you like)
- 3 15.5 ounce canned Cannellini Beans (4 cup cooked beans)
- 1½ cup water
Equipment
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). I a medium size white bowl, combined molasses, vegan Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, and vegan BBQ sauce. Mix together until well combined. This sauce will be the base on how your baked beans will be flavored. Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking. Set aside.
- Place your Dutch oven or large pot over medium high heat. Add olive oil and heat up for a 1-2 minutes. Add in your chopped onions and green peppers. Sauté until vegetables become soft for 2-3 minutes. Next add in your minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until garlic becomes fragrant. Next add in your vegan ground beef and heat through until vegan grounds are brown for 3-4 minutes.
- Once everything is done sauteing, turn off your heat. Add to the pot your cannellini beans and the sauce you mixed earlier. Stir together. Take water and pour it into your bowl where your molasses sauce mixture was. Mix together and pour that into your pot. This is to help get as much flavor in your baked beans as possible. Mix together.
- Place a lid over your Dutch oven and carefully place it in your preheated oven to bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you don't have a Dutch oven, grab a 11×7 inch baking glass casserole dish and more your mixture into it from your pot. Cover with aluminum foil and place in the oven to baked for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Check half way through to make sure your beans are not over drying.
- Once done, carefully remove from oven and allow it to cool for 5 – 10 minutes. Serve with your favorite vegan BBQ recipes and enjoy!
